Couric asks Obama a variation of the dreaded biggest weakness question: Katie Couric: What one personal flaw do you think might hinder your ability to be president? Barack Obama: I dont think theres ⦠a flaw that would hinder my ability to function as president. I think that all of us have things we need to improve. You know, I said during the primary that my management of paper can sometimes be a problem. Couric: You can come up with something better than that, though, cant you? Obama: I just use it as an example of something that Im constantly tryin to work on. What is often a strength can be a weakness. So, you know, for me there are times where I want to think through all our options. At some point youve gotta make sure that were making a decision. So far, at least Ive proven to be pretty good about knowing when that time is. I think, as president, with all the information thats coming at you constantly, youre never gonna have 100 percent information. And youve just gotta make the call quickly and surely. And I think ⦠thats a capacity that Ive shown myself to have. As special as Obama may be, we find that Obama is human too; he has difficulty with this question, just like everyone else. He tries to skirt the issue by saying I dont think theres a flaw and follows up with a vague, innocuous statement about his management of paper can sometimes be a problem. Couric doesnt let him off the hook, and Obama comes back with a stronger response. Obama is well-known for his deliberate and cool decision making style. And here hes candid on why this strength can be a liability. But he reassures us that, although this is a weakness, it is not a problem. Although he doesnt cite a specific example, Obamas fast start indicates that he is a fast-moving, action-oriented leader eradicating concerns around his deliberate decision making style. What is your leadership style? Couric uses a behavioral interview question to probe Obamas leadership style: Katie Couric: When was the last time you fired someone who worked for you and why?John McCain: Well, we had to make a change in our campaign. It was going in the wrong direction. We knew we had serious problems in our campaign and the way it was being managed. And that will be well chronicled in the books that are written after this election. But, it wasnt easy and it wasnt fun. And I still value the friendship of the people that left our campaign. And it was just that we needed a different direction. It certainly wasnt anything that had to do with personal differences. Barack Obama: I have directed people to be fired during the course of this campaign. I would prefer not sharing that with the public because obviously I dont want to embarrass them. You know I dont mind people making mistakes, but I want them to learn from their mistakes, and, what I wont tolerate are people who put their own ego or their desire for self-aggrandizement ahead of the team. You know, I played sports as a young person, and still try occasionally as an older person, and I am a big believer in theres no I in team. And I dont tolerate a lot of drama or people back-biting or trying to push people down to push themselves up. When I see evidence of people who are not acting on the basis of how are we getting our mission accomplished, then Ill give them a couple of warnings, and if its chronic, they wont be part of my organization. Obama gives a direct yet discreet response. Then, he uses what I call the springboard tactic answering one question and discussing another question. In this case, he talks about his management style. Here we get the sense that he is team-oriented and accepts mistakes, but has low tolerance for organizational politics hence his nickname No Drama Obama. By comparison, John McCains response is not as strong as Obamas. McCain responds with a vague and rambling anecdote. Theres no spring boarding here. Instead, McCain is apologetic, possibly even sheepish, about the firing. His response doesnt give us the sense that hes the self-assured, rational, and strong leader that Obama is. To top off his ineffectual response, McCain volunteered some unsavory tidbits about how his campaign was managed, further damaging his leadership credibility. What are the biggest opportunities and challenges in this industry? Courics question on the best and worst thing that has ever happened to this country is the most similar to this often asked job interview question. Just like the opportunities and challenges question, Courics question tests Obamas subject matter expertise and his judgment in identifying and distinguishing critical events. Katie Couric: What do you think is the best and worst thing that has ever happened to this country?Barack Obama: The best thing that ever happened to this country was the founding fathers and the starting premise of America. We hold these truths as self evident that all men are created equal endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights, among these, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That idea just kept pushing throughout centuries, through a civil war, through civil rights, through womens rights. It became the North Star for people, not just in America but around the world. The worst probably would have to be slavery in this country. Although the treatment of Native Americans oftentimes ⦠showed great cruelty. You know, but slavery was a stain on this country. Fortunately, we had people like Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman and Dr. King and you know, so many were able to battle through that legacy. And were still wrestling with it. But its one where I feel more optimistic about the direction of this country. Offering details is the easiest way to convey credibility in a job interview. By quoting the Declaration of Independence, Obama shows that this is not an off-the-cuff response. He is trying to convince the reader that he is intelligent and knowledgable, and the quote helps cement that image. And of course, the quotes theatric effect cannot be underestimated. It subtly draws parallels between him and Americas founding fathers. It also breaks up the interviews staccato rhythm. Obamas mention of Native Americans is also noteworthy. It wasnt necessary, but it does show that he considered other alternatives before deciding on his final response. The interviewer is free to ask follow-up questions around the Native American issue. Without the mention, his choice of slavery may come across as trite and one-dimensional.

(Picked up two ideas from the story myself, Ill be working on them over the coming weeks ;-)) One small idea to perhaps add at the beginning of the book? Then, because every lunch ends with home-work, the reader should do the dame home-work as Paul will do, turning it into more than just a business/guide book. When you call a meeting to discuss the issue one final time, you might try to explain your position and your pain points, but this time will probably not result in real change. So hereâs the first question Pink recommends you ask. âDebbie (your fictional colleague): On a scale of 1 to 10, how ready are you to change this pattern and get the information into the system on time so we can deliver the report on time without stress?â Debbie will pick a number that represents her readiness for change. Letâs say she picks 4. âIâd like to do better,â she says, âbut I have a crazy schedule, and I just canât get to it when you think I should.â Hereâs your next question, and this is a crucial moment, so deliver it well. âThanks for being honest with me, Debbie. Living Your Own Version of Personal Happiness Have you noticed how often someone else is telling you what it takes to be happy? Telling you the who, what, when, where, and even why about what you need to do to attain personal happiness? How many happiness gurus have you listened to? How many times have you spent weeks, months, or even years pursuing their plan of happiness for you? Maybe you should stop. With over seven billion people on the planet, surely there isnt a one-size-fits-all answer to what makes us happy. Can you look back and see frustrated efforts chasing someone elses grand happiness plan? A few years back, as part of a business I had, I frequently found myself in the homes of Hispanic families. In almost every home, I couldnt help but notice a calm and contented energy. I noticed because it was foreign to my distinctly white middle class upbringing and life experience. In these usually modest homes, there was a very obviously different set of priorities. And they were happy. Contented. Something besides just having more money, more stuff, was driving their happiness. Stop The Madness! If you think Im going to lay out the keys to happiness, youre going to be disappointed. Because I cant tell you what will make you happy. Only you can do that. What I can do is share my observations of what seems to be common elements in most peoples perspective on happiness. From those Hispanic homes to the life stories Ive personally listened to from those at the end of their life, heres what Ive noticed. Possessions Measure your possessions only as they, and the efforts you expend to attain them, provide an acceptable return. If your efforts are not paying dividends of happiness, reconsider your priorities. Like everything in life, the law of diminishing returns will devalue the attainment of more stuff at an ever-increasing rate. Figure out what your own definition of enough is, and let that be your guide. Relationships Im sure youve heard that the only thing you really possess at the end of life is your relationships. However true that may be, what is indisputable is the truth that at your last breath, relationships are all youll be treasuring. Theyre the only thing youll be missing as you contemplate leaving this world. Good Will If you think that good will is a part of a business evaluation or the charitable thrift store down the road, you may want to spend next weekend reading The Power of Reputation. But good will is much more than just reputation, and yet quite simple to relate. Think of someone whose image conjures up pleasant memories and feelings. Theres probably a smile on your face as you think about how that person has shown up in your life or how theyve inspired you. They live an admirable life of teaching, sharing, caring, and making the world a better place. Theyre dependable, reliable, and honest. They are purveyors of good will. Now think of someone quite the opposite. Thoughts of this person may cause reactions of anxiety, distrust, frustration, or even disgust. You dont aspire to be like them. The biblical tenet you will know them by their fruits applies, and their lives are typically full of conflict and upset. Adopting a policy of cultivating good will pays dividends throughout ones life, and after. No matter how you define your personal happiness, good will and reputation will enhance it. What Path To Personal Happiness Are You On? Too often, it seems, we get so busy in the business of life and the elusive pursuit of happiness that we forget to check the map to see where were headed. Maybe its time to ask yourself How happy am I, right now? Am I on a path that allows and creates happiness by my own definition, or on a path someone else has designed?
